Description
A guide to recreating Dave’s Hot Chicken’s signature spice levels at home, allowing you to customize your heat experience.
Ingredients
- Chicken pieces (tenders or thighs)
- All-purpose flour
- Cornstarch
- Spices (cayenne pepper, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, salt)
- Buttermilk
- Eggs
- Vegetable oil for frying
- Optional: Slider buns, coleslaw, pickles for serving
Instructions
- Marinate chicken in buttermilk and eggs for at least 30 minutes.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, cornstarch, and your chosen blend of spices for the desired heat level.
- Dredge the marinated chicken pieces in the seasoned flour mixture, ensuring they are well-coated.
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or heavy-bottomed pot to 350°F (175°C).
- Carefully fry the chicken until golden brown and cooked through, about 6-8 minutes per side depending on the size.
- Remove chicken from oil and drain on a wire rack.
- For extra spice, you can toss the fried chicken in a cayenne pepper-based sauce or a spice blend.
- Serve hot, optionally on slider buns with coleslaw and pickles.
Notes
- The spice blend is key to replicating the Dave’s Hot Chicken experience. Experiment with cayenne pepper for heat and paprika for color and flavor.
- Ensure the oil is at the correct temperature for crispy, evenly cooked chicken.
- Adjust the amount of cayenne pepper to control the heat level, from ‘Plain’ to ‘Reaper’.
- For a crispier coating, you can double-dredge the chicken (dip in flour, then egg, then flour again).
